Educational Programme for Schools at the Architekturzentrum Wien
What kind of awareness do young people have of their living environment and surroundings, which have of course been designed? How do we discover spaces?
These are the questions that the Architekturzentrum Wien addresses in its introduction to architecture for the young, the goal being to broaden young people’s knowledge and understanding of architecture and its history, and to provide them with the opportunity to form their own opinions. Extending their understanding of contemporary architecture is the key aim, with a focus on increasing sensitivity so they can discover the urban environment for themselves, leading to an awareness of the designed environment in general.

What do they expect from contemporary architecture?
The educational concept for schoolchildren and the approach to the themes take into consideration the different age groups involved and individual differences in young people’s learning behaviour. According to David Kolb, there are four different ways for people to learn to be distinguished between in an exercise: by feeling, by watching, by thinking and by doing. We apply this principle to every workshop so that each participant has the opportunity to learn with the approach that suits them best. Some people learn well by becoming familiar with something in their own way, others gain the most from an exchange of experiences, from the reactions and comments of their peers, other young people learn best when they are given the opportunity to do practical work in a hands-on approach etc.

What does an architect actually do?
For example, working on the multifunctional redesign of the Schellinggasse pedestrian zone right next to the school with pupils of the BORG on Hegelgasse. As this square also serves as recreational space for the pupils of the school, an attempt was made to adapt this area to meet the needs of the 15-18 year-olds, to use it for the school. The planning was done as a project over the course of a semester.

What do you need to plan a building?
At the outset the materials available for the design phase were pieces of fruit, such as bananas, apples etc., out of which they developed interesting shapes for the seating in the yard. These shapes were realised in modelling clay and presented at the Architekturzentrum Wien along with the plans and sketches, where a jury selected the project to be realised. This project is currently in the realisation phase.

What is architecture?
A similar workshop is scheduled with pupils in Istanbul. A comparison of the two school projects is currently being planned.
