M+

M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, it is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world, with a bold ambition to establish ourselves as one of the world’s leading cultural institutions. M+ is a new kind of museum that reflects our unique time and place, a museum that builds on Hong Kong’s historic balance of the local and the international to define a distinctive and innovative voice for Asia’s twenty-first century.

Collection
M+ has four permanent collections: M+ Collection, M+ Sigg Collection, M+ Library Special Collection, and M+ Collection Archives. The design and architecture works in the M+ Collection survey global narratives of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, placing particular emphasis on design from Hong Kong and Asia. Among these objects are posters, electronics, textiles, furniture, building models, and even entire architectural interiors. The M+ Sigg Collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of contemporary Chinese art in the world. The M+ Collection Archives lends deeper insights into the creative processes of makers within the M+ collections. A majority of the M+ Collection Archives consists of fonds related to design and architecture that reflect the curatorial team’s transnational research focus. Many M+ collections object records are accessible through the M+ website, and the archives and library collections of M+ are available at the museum’s Research Centre.

Library Holdings
The M+ Reference Library has over 15,000 books, monographs, periodicals, exhibition catalogues, and other electronic records and printed ephemera relating to the museum’s multiple areas of focus. The M+ Library Special Collection addresses printed material as a key creative medium and alternative art practice in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, additionally holding a variety of unique books and rare published materials, including artist books, comics, graphic design publications, magazines, and manuscripts.
