Museum and Archives, Kyoto Institute of Technology

Museum and Archives, Kyoto Institute of Technology was established in April 1980 as a cooperative research facility within the university and opened to the public in October 1981. The museum holds materials collected as teaching resources since the founding of Kyoto College of Industry in 1902, one of the university’s predecessor institutions, along with paintings, assignment works, and other pieces created by the school’s faculty and students. These works are recognized as records documenting the practices of the school, which pioneered authentic design education in Japan.

Collection
The collection of over 50,000 items encompasses a wide range of materials, including paintings, posters, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, and architectural drawings. The bulk of the architectural materials consist of a collection centered on the original design drawings of architect Togo Murano (1981-1984), who was active throughout the pre-war and post-war periods. Additionally, the collection includes materials formerly owned by architect Kakuji Matsunoi (1895-1982) and editor Yoshihisa Miyauchi (1926-2009). The museum continues to collect a wide range of design-related materials, including architectural materials, conducting research and holding exhibitions. Furthermore, it contributes to education and research by involving students in organizing materials and creating models for exhibitions
